If you could be a character in your books for a day, who would you be and why?

Kendall Moorehead, the ghost huntress.  Which...I sort of am ironically as I became one to research my books and now it's something I do on a regular basis.  LOL!

Can you name one moment that stands out as a favorite since you've become a writer?

The very first piece of fan mail I got.  I had given my first book to my boss' 8 year old daughter and she wrote me a thank you note telling me how much she loved it and that she wanted to be an author, like me, when she grew up.  Really warmed my heart.

What is your favorite place to write? Is there anything you need in order to write? (i.e. coffee, chocolate, music, etc.)

I live full-time in an RV...so I write everywhere!  Mostly, it's great to sit in the passenger seat with my headphones on blaring House/Trance/Dance music as I'm in the "writing cave."

Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.

The fifth book in the GHOST HUNTRESS series, THE DISCOVERY, will be out May 1st.  It's a little darker and filled with secrets and mysteries.  I just love writing these characters!

If you could be a character in your books for a day, who would you be and why?

I'd be Miranda, from Book III of The Hollow Kingdom Trilogy. Her elf husband is the handsomest man alive. I'd like to see exactly what that looks like! And I'd like to go dancing with the elves for a night. It would be an unforgettable experience.


Can you name one moment that stands out as a favorite since you've become a writer?

That would have to be the day that my WUTHERING HEIGHTS prequel, THE HOUSE OF DEAD MAIDS, got a great review from Bronteblog (complete with seven footnotes) *and* a starred review from The Horn Book magazine. My mother was a children's lit professor and a Bronte scholar, so I grew up reading books about the Brontes and hearing about how important The Horn Book is in the world of children's lit. That day, my life came full circle. Now The Horn Book magazine staff and the Bronte scholars are reading about me!

What is your favorite place to write? Is there anything you need in order to write? (i.e. coffee, chocolate, music, etc.)
I write in my office for the most part, although I've been known to drag my laptop all over the house in search of inspiration. Coffee's important but not essential. I can't write without chewing gum, though--it's crazy, but there it is.

Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.

I just had a book released in paperback: BY THESE TEN BONES, a werewolf tale set in the medieval Scottish Highlands. Maddie, the daughter of the town weaver, meets a pale, green-eyed woodcarver named Paul and soon begins to fall in love with him. But when a hideous creature leaves the young man wounded, Maddie gets drawn into a secret. Soon, other people in her town begin to die, one by one. Maddie can save them all--but only at a terrible price.

You might call this book a paranormal romance, but I call it an old-fashioned love story. This book is a great favorite of mine. I love Maddie's confidence, and her strength, which comes from her sense of optimism. And she and Paul are so sweet together.

I'd love to become either of the tigers so I could feel the strength and power they have and run in the jungle.

When I got my agent is one of my favorite memories. I hung up and screamed and called everyone I knew.

I write at my home office computer and I need something sugar free to drink, a candle, and my mythology reference books.

What are you looking forward to most at RT Teen Day 2011?

Seeing all the excited teens. They have such enthusiasm that it's hard to remain unaffected by their energy.

If you could be a character in your books for a day, who would you be and why?

I’d be Damen. He’s gorgeous, gifted, magical, well traveled, and has lived such an incredibly rich life—witnessing historical events in the making, and hanging with everyone from the great artists of The Italian Renaissance, to the great thinkers in science, to Marie Antoinette, to The Beatles—and yet, he’s managed to remain humble and lovely and true to himself. Um, guess I have a bit of a crush oh him. :)

Can you name one moment that stands out as a favorite since you've become a writer?

The first time I saw my debut novel, FAKING 19, on the bookstore shelves my mom was with me and we jumped up and down and squealed like fools. It was the realization of a long-held dream come true.

What is your favorite place to write? Is there anything you need in order to write? (i.e. coffee, chocolate, music, etc.)

I write at home—my office is comfy, and warm, and I painted the walls purple so I’d have something nice to stare at while I’m thinking up new ways to torture my characters. My writing ritual involves a scented candle, a cup of green tea, a playlist created for whatever book I’m working on, and a crystal necklace a reader gave me—once those things are all gathered and ready, I’m good to go!

On March 15, book two in the Riley Bloom series, Shimmer, was released, and on June 7, Everlasting, the sixth and final book in The Immortals series will hit the shelves!

If you could be a character in your books for a day, who would you be and why?

If I could be one of our characters for a say, it would definitely be Amma. She is a Mortal, but she's a powerful Seer. I would love to see the world through her eyes -- and find out what's in all those mason jars in her bedroom. (Of course, I'd also bake myself some pie.)

Can you name one moment that stands out as a favorite since you've become a writer?

The moment I really realized I was a writer was when the galley (Advanced Reader Edition) of BEAUTIFUL CREATURES arrived at my house. Holding the actual book made it real for me.

What is your favorite place to write? Is there anything you need in order to write? (i.e. coffee, chocolate, music, etc.)

My favorite place to write is in my "comfy chair." It's an old Eames chair with an ottoman. I need complete silence because I actually hear the characters voices in my head as I'm writing. Aside from that -- my laptop, an endless supply of Diet Coke with lots of ice, some Black Sabbath or Soundgarden before I start writing, and my dog Spike, who sleeps in his bed next to while I write.

Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.

There are four books in The Caster Chronicles. The third book is really about the consequences of the choices the characters make in BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS. We delve deeper into the Caster world, and Ethan and Lena's relationship. We also kill some people...

If you could be a character in your books for a day, who would you be and why?
None of them! I'm perfectly happy being me, so the idea of being anyone else sounds horrible.


Can you name one moment that stands out as a favorite since you've become a writer?
This job is filled with fabulous moments, but one of the recent ones that tilted my world was having an artist whose music I've listened to for a decade tell me he was a fan.  I’ve listened to every CD his band has done (including having his music as a default on my writing playlists), so knowing that he’s read my novels were utterly surreal.

What is your favorite place to write? Is there anything you need in order to write? (i.e. coffee, chocolate, music, etc.)
I don’t write without music unless I’m outside.  Typically, I work at my desk, caffeine in hand, music blaring, feet propped up, and at least one of my Rottweilers beside me.  I take retreats though (Scotland, San Diego), and then I write outside by the sea, a loch, ruins, cactus gardens, etc. In that case, nature provides all the music I need.

Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.

Darkest Mercy (Feb 22, 2011) is the 5th and final book in the Wicked Lovely series. It pulls together the events of the first four books, both romantically & politically.  Pretty soon after that, my debut adult book, Graveminder, is out (May 17, 2011). That’s a story of a mortician, a commitment-phobe, a dead girl, and a town where the dead don’t always stay dead.  So, right now, I’m focused on both books simultaneously—which is very interesting as they as such different types of stories.
